Scuba Diving with Giant Green Moray Eels
Green Moray Eels. Giant Green
Moray Eels as the name suggests, is a very large eel, reaching
up to 300 cm (10 ft) in length and 30 kg (66.1 lbs) in weight.
Juveniles are tan in color with large black spots, adults
have black specks that grade into leopard like spots behind
the head and a black area surrounding the gill opening.
Green Moray Eels. Are
very soft to the touch with a feel like velvet and not at
all slimy. In Grand Cayman at Stingray City scuba divers
can often interact with these beautiful sea creatures some
are very big indeed. Moray Eels have very poor eyesight
and feed primarily by sense of smell which is very acute
they can detect things from very far away, most of the moray
eel species have develop a very good sense of smell, remember
that most moray eels like to hunt at night, since they can
not see very good at night they use their sense of smell
to catch their prey.
Moray
Eels are excellent swimmers, they are usually very
fast and precise, moray eels do not swim like other fish,
they actually move like snakes in the water, but this helps
them move quicker, moray eels are predators and they
need to be fast to be successful in catching their food. |

Moray Eel Species.
There are over two hundred different types of moray
eel species, there is just not just one size for moray eels,
they come in all sizes, from super big moray eels to very
small moray eels. They can be very aggressive, when a moray
eel feels threaten it will attack, no matter if its a human,
there have been cases of people getting bit and losing their
fingers to moray eels.
Moray
Eel's Bite. Moray Eels have some very big teeth,
as well as the rows down the sides of the jaw they also
have a row of backwards curved teeth down the center of
the upper jaw. They can and will bite if they are provoked,
and sometime even with out provocation, I have seen divers
get bitten and I have on my arm a scar as a memento to the
Moray's sharp teeth.
Morays
Have Sharp Teeth. The teeth of the Moray Eel are
curved backwards so when it does bite pulling away only
makes the teeth go in further, so the key is to stay still
and let the eel decide that you are not good to eat and
let's go of you. Moray Eels have three sets of teeth one
either side of it's mouth and a third row in the center.
Do not try to feed a Moray Eel they are very fast at grabbing
and will easily take your fingers also.
Remember
to always respect the sea and its creatures. The sea is
their home and when anything in the sea is disturbed, to
them it is the disruption of their home, and naturally they
will interpret it as an attack and they will go into protection
mode. When scuba diving or swimming, just be watchful and
do not provoke the Moray Eels. While a number of these eels
are small there are eels that are nearly 11 feet long, you
do not want to take a chance with creatures that big. They
are sure to cause a lot of unnecessary pain for you. |
