Marine Animals and Tropical Fish. A living coral reef is as diverse as
any rain forest and can be likened to a rain forest, where
the coral it self is the equivalent of a tree. Many trees
make a forest and many corals make a reef. Many woodland
creatures depend on the trees for food and as a home and
it is the same with a reef. Tropical fish and marine animals of all shapes
and sizes live on a coral reef. Corals them selves are tiny marine animals,
called polyps and they provide food for all kinds of
tropical fish and other sea
creatures.
Ocean Marine Life. A large amount of all
life on Earth exists in the oceans. Exactly how large the
proportion is unknown, since many ocean species are still
to be discovered. While the oceans comprise about 71% of
the Earth's surface, due to their depth they encompass about
300 times the habitable volume of the terrestrial habitats
on Earth. Many species are economically important to humans,
including food fish. It is also
becoming understood that the well being of marine
animals and other tropical fish are linked in very
fundamental ways. The human body of knowledge regarding
the relationship between life in the sea and important
cycles is rapidly growing, with new discoveries being
made nearly every day. |

Organisms can cover every square inch of a coral reef.
Tropical Fish. Generally,
tropical fish that swim on coral
reefs are as colorful as the reef itself. Examples are
the beautiful parrotfish, angelfish, damselfish, and
butterfly fish. At night, some change to a less vivid
color. Besides colorful fish matching the
colorful coral,
other fish predatory and herbivorous fish such as horse
eyed jacks and moray eels as well as other predatory
aquatic animals emerge and become active hunters while
others rest.
Living Reefs. Other fish groups
found on coral reefs include groupers, grunts and
wrasses. Over 4,000 species of fish inhabit coral reefs.
It has been suggested that the fish species that inhabit
coral reefs are able to coexist in such high numbers
because any free living space is inhabited by the first
plank tonic fish larvae that find it in what has been
termed "a lottery for living space".
Living Rocks. A living coral reef is as diverse as any rain
forest and can be likened to a rain forest, where the
coral it self is the equivalent of a tree. Many trees
make a forest and many corals make a reef. Many woodland
creatures depend on the trees for food and as a home and
it is the same with a reef. Marine animals of all shapes
and sizes live on a coral reef. Corals are tiny marine
animals, called polyps, coral polyps are related to and
look like sea anemones. Each individual coral secretes a
stony cup of limestone around itself as a skeleton. |
